Halloween Oreo cupcakes — five designs from one frosting
One Oreo as the base, five designs from one bowl of frosting
Hello foodies! Halloween cupcakes rarely fail because of the batter and almost always because of the decoration — because you mix up five different mixtures and end up with too much of each one. Here there's only one bowl of frosting, and it works its way through the whole recipe in three stages.
First you take from the white frosting what you need for the mummy and the ghost. Then you fold in Oreo crumbs — those become the bat and the spider. What's left gets a little cocoa and turns into the soil on the grave. This order isn't a suggestion, it's a one-way street: brown never turns back to white.
The base is a whole Oreo lying under the batter. It softens slightly during baking and becomes a moist layer under the cupcake — and that's exactly the point.

Ingredients
Cupcakes (12 pieces)
Frosting
Step by step
Baking the cupcakes
Wet and dry kept apart
Mix the eggs with the sugar and the vanilla paste, then add the milk and the melted butter — everything liquid goes into one bowl. Sift the flour, cocoa, Baking powder and salt into a second one. Sifting isn't just a formality with cocoa: it clumps, and the lumps won't dissolve in the batter afterwards.

Mix the two together
Add the dry to the wet and stir only until no flour is visible any more. It doesn't need longer — quite the opposite: the longer you stir, the tougher the cupcake gets.

A whole Oreo as the base
Place a whole Oreo in each case — flat, with the filling facing up. On top, two scoops of batter, until the case is about two thirds full. No higher: the batter rises, and an overflowed cupcake can no longer be decorated cleanly.

70 °C fan, 16 minutes
Bake the cupcakes at 170 °C fan for 16 minutes. Do the skewer test in the centre — the Oreo at the base stays soft, that's how it should be. Then let them cool completely: on a lukewarm cupcake any frosting melts away.

Frosting
Beat butter and Fondant until fluffy. Cream cheese last
Beat the butter and Fondant well with the paddle-attachment bowl until the mixture is pale and airy. The Fondant needs this time — it's firm at the start and only becomes smooth through beating.
Only now add the cream cheese and stir it in briefly. Beating too long makes it runny — and a runny frosting won't hold its shape, least of all the bandages of a mummy.

Decoration
Cutting the Oreo pieces
Cut everything first, then decorate — with frosting on your fingers, cutting gets fiddly. You'll need:
- Gravestone: trim the sides of a whole Oreo straight so it becomes angular instead of round. Keep the offcuts — they'll become the bat's ears.
- Bat: twist open an Oreo. The half with the thin layer of filling is the body; break the other half into two pieces for the wings.
- Crumbs: crumble five Oreos — they'll go into the frosting and onto the grave later.

Mummy — crumbs first, then bandages
First spread a thin layer of plain white frosting over the whole cupcake — it's just the glue. Then dip the cupcake upside down into the Oreo crumbs until the surface is darkly covered. Only now come the bandages: pipe the white frosting over it every which way — horizontal, vertical, feel free to be irregular. It's exactly this messiness that makes the mummy, and the dark base makes every bandage stand out. To finish, place two Candy eyes in a gap.

Ghost — white frosting, tipped smooth
Pipe a tall swirl of white frosting and place the cupcake upside down on baking paper. This makes the dome flat and even — you can't achieve that by hand. Lift it off carefully, then paint on eyes, nose and mouth with dark Cake icing.

Now the crumbs go into the frosting
From here on, the white frosting becomes an Oreo frosting: stir in the crumbs. Before this, you must have done everything that needs pure white — there's no going back.
Bat — body, wings, ears
Pipe a swirl of Oreo frosting. Lay the Oreo half with the thin layer of filling flat as the body, and push the two broken pieces in at the sides as wings. Halve the offcuts from the gravestone and set them on top as ears. Finally, stick on two eyes with a dab of Cake icing.

Spider — first the legs, then the body
The order matters here: first pipe the legs directly onto the frosting with dark Cake icing, and only then place the Oreo on top as the body. If you do it the other way round, you can no longer get the Piping nozzle underneath the biscuit. Stick the eyes onto the Oreo with a dab of icing.

Grave — the final frosting step
Stir cocoa and more crumbs into the rest of the frosting until it is an earthy brown. Pipe it on, sprinkle with Oreo crumbs — that's the soil. Stick the Oreo cut into a square shape upright into it and write «R.I.P.» on it with white Cake icing. For such fine lettering, melt the icing and fill it into a paper cone: from a normal Piping nozzle it comes out too thick.

A lovely touch
Not needed for the recipe — but it fits nicely.

So they're guaranteed to succeed
That's the one rule this recipe won't forgive. From a single Bowl you make three frostings: pure white, with crumbs, with cocoa. Each stage is final. So first do everything that needs pure white — the mummy and the ghost — then the bat and the spider, and the grave last of all.
A frosting made with cream cheese and butter melts at the slightest residual warmth. It doesn't just look runny, it slides: wings and gravestones tip over. Let the cupcakes cool down truly completely, if necessary half an hour in the fridge.
«R.I.P.» on an Oreo is only a few millimetres across. From a normal Piping nozzle the icing comes out far too thick. Melt the white Cake icing, fill it into a self-rolled paper cone and cut off the tip as small as possible — better to trim it twice than once too big.
When you cut the gravestone straight, two curved edge pieces are left over. Those are exactly the bat's ears. So cut the gravestones first, even though you won't need them until the end.
Frequently asked questions
Because it softens slightly during baking and forms a moist, dense layer under the cupcake — you taste it as its own layer. Crumbs spread through the batter and disappear into it.
You can use icing sugar instead, but then it becomes softer and holds the fine shapes less well. The Fondant gives the frosting firmness — and you need that for the mummy's bandages and the ghost's tuft.
22 pieces: 12 for the bases, 5 to cut, 5 to crumble. That's two packs — and the reserve is welcome, because not every biscuit breaks the way it should when you open it up.
The Cake icing was too warm. After melting it, let it cool briefly until it becomes slightly viscous — then the line stays where you place it. And always pipe the legs before the Oreo: under the biscuit you can't correct them any more.
