Cool bags and ice packs are essential in summer when you transport cream cakes, mousse cakes, cheesecakes or ice cream. Even a short car journey in the heat can soften cream and buttercream, make fondant sweat and melt ice cream. In a cool bag with ice packs your cake stays cool for longer and arrives in shape, whether for a barbecue, a garden party, a July wedding or a birthday by the lake.

Ideas: when you need a cool bag

A cool bag is not only useful in high summer. In spring and autumn, too, a car parked in the sun can heat up quickly. Particularly delicate are cakes with cream, mascarpone or quark, mousse and yoghurt cakes, cheesecakes, tiramisu, tartlets with vanilla custard, and ice cream cakes and semifreddo. If you are delivering a cake to a customer, preparing desserts for a buffet or bringing ice cream home from the market, a cool bag and ice packs keep you on the safe side.

Cool bags for cakes, bakes and ice cream at a glance

Our cool bags come in different formats to suit cake boxes, traybakes and ice cream:

  • Cool bag 25 x 25 x 26 cm, 31 x 31 x 30 cm and 35 x 35 x 30 cm for cakes in a cake box
  • Rectangular cool bag for loaf cakes and long desserts
  • Flat cool bags 35 x 30 x 8 cm and 50 x 40 x 8 cm for tarts, traybakes and pastries
  • Cool bags with base 25 x 22 x 15 cm and 50 x 33 x 20 cm
  • Large ice cream packaging
  • Ice pack 13 x 9 cm for cool bags and cool boxes

How to transport chilled cakes properly

First place the cake in a suitable cake box, then put the box in the cool bag. Choose a cool bag slightly larger than the box so that it slides in easily and there is room for ice packs.

  • Put the ice packs in the freezer for several hours beforehand.
  • Place the ice packs beside the box, not directly on top of it.
  • Chill cream and mousse cakes thoroughly before the journey.
  • Put the bag flat in the car, out of the sun if possible, and keep the trip short.

For ice cream: pack it well frozen and return it to the freezer as soon as you arrive. Avoid opening the bag on the way so the cold stays inside.

If you stop on the way, take the bag with you rather than leaving it in a hot car. At your destination, put the cake in the fridge as soon as possible and take it out just before serving. This keeps cream rosettes, icing and fondant decorations in shape, and your guests enjoy the cake exactly as you made it.

Combinations: box, bag and ice pack

A cool bag does not replace the cake box, it complements it. For classic cakes, square cake boxes fit into the 31 x 31 x 30 cm or 35 x 35 x 30 cm cool bags, while tiered and drip cakes need tall cake boxes up to 30 x 30 x 30 cm, for example in the 31 x 31 x 30 cm cool bag. Tarts and pastries in flat 5 cm pastry boxes fit into the flat 35 x 30 x 8 cm or 50 x 40 x 8 cm bags. Loaf cakes and Yule logs travel well in the rectangular cool bag. In hot weather, allow one or two extra ice packs.

What to look for when buying a cool bag

Start from the box, not the cake: measure the length, width and height of the packed cake and choose a cool bag that is slightly larger all round. For tall cakes the height matters most, for tarts and traybakes the base. A cool bag with a base gives the box extra support. If you deliver cakes regularly, it is worth keeping several sizes and enough ice packs in stock so that a set is always ready in the freezer.

Frequently asked questions about cool bags & ice packs

Which cool bag for a 30 x 30 cm cake box?

Choose a slightly larger bag, for example the 31 x 31 x 30 cm or 35 x 35 x 30 cm cool bag, depending on the height of the box.

How many ice packs do I need?

That depends on the bag, the temperature and the duration. In hot weather and on longer journeys, several ice packs are worthwhile.

Can I transport ice cream in the cool bag?

Yes, for short distances. Freeze the ice cream thoroughly and add ice packs.

Can the ice pack go directly on the cake box?

Better not. Place it beside the box so that no condensation forms on the lid and the cake is not pressed down.

Which cool bag for tarts and traybakes?

The flat cool bags 35 x 30 x 8 cm and 50 x 40 x 8 cm are made exactly for that.
