Rectangular cake boards are the right base for traybakes, chequerboard cakes, number cakes and large party cakes. At Cakelicious you will find rectangular cake boards from 20 x 30 cm to 50 x 37 cm, as thick cake drums and as thin boards, in white, silver, gold, pearl white and many other colours. Whether for the school fair, a company anniversary or a milestone birthday: a sturdy rectangular base makes large cakes portable and ensures a neat presentation on the buffet.
Sizes and thicknesses
- 20 x 30 cm (A4) and 25 x 35 cm for smaller traybakes and rectangular cakes
- 30 x 40 cm (A3), the most common size, for number cakes and birthday cakes
- 35 x 45 cm and 37 x 50 cm for large cakes and buffets
The thick rectangular cake drums are 12 mm and carry even heavy fondant-covered cakes. The thin boards are light and slip easily into a box. The classics are the 30 x 40 cm cake drums in white and silver and the silver cake board 40.5 x 30.5 cm. If you need to deliver a rectangular cake, go for the thick version: it stays flat even in large sizes and can be carried safely with two hands. For especially heavy cakes, there are also extra-strong 30 x 40 cm cake boards in gold and pearl white.
Colours and styles
As well as classic white and silver, there are rectangular cake boards in gold, for example in A4, A3 or XL format, and in elegant pearl white in 30 x 40 cm and 35 x 45 cm. The silver/gold cake boards come in sizes M (25 x 35 cm), L (35 x 45 cm) and XL (37 x 50 cm). The thin boards bring colour: the thin rectangular cake board 30 x 25 cm is available in white, silver, gold, black, red, fuchsia and baby pink, the thin 40 x 30 cm board in white, silver, black, red, baby pink and baby blue. This lets you match the base to the colour scheme of the party, for example baby blue or baby pink for a baby shower and black or gold for an elegant milestone birthday. For small bakes, the reusable white rectangular mini boards round off the range.
Rectangular cake boards for number cakes
For a two-digit number cake, for example for an 18th or 50th birthday, a large board from 30 x 40 cm upwards works best. Allow a border of 2 to 3 cm all round so you can hold the board comfortably. Boxes for number cakes can be found in the Number cake boxes category, other rectangular boxes in Rectangular cake boxes. Tips for traybakes and large cakes
- Let traybakes cool completely before turning them out or lifting them onto the board. Warm sponge breaks easily.
- Lift large cakes with two wide cake lifters or a rimless baking sheet.
- Fix the cake to the base with a little buttercream or jam so nothing slides.
- Always carry large boards with both hands from underneath and transport them flat in the car.
- The visible edge of a thick board can be finished with fondant or a matching ribbon.
What to look for when buying rectangular cake boards
First measure your tin or cake and add the border you want. Then decide by weight and transport: for heavy cakes or long journeys, a thick cake drum or an extra-strong board is the right choice; for light cakes in a box, a thin board is enough. Finally, choose the colour to suit the occasion. If the cake is handed over in a box, the board must not be larger than the base of the box.
Frequently asked questions about rectangular cake boards
Which size for a traybake?
Measure your tin and choose a board 3 to 5 cm larger. For a 25 x 35 cm tin, for example, a 30 x 40 cm cake board is a good fit.
Thick or thin?
For heavy cakes, fondant and transport we recommend the 12 mm cake drum. For light cakes, a thin board is enough.
Are there boxes to match the 30 x 40 cm board?
Yes, rectangular cake boxes in matching sizes can be found in the Rectangular cake boxes category.
Are there coloured rectangular cake boards?
Yes, the thin boards come in black, red, fuchsia, baby pink and baby blue among others, plus gold and pearl white.
What do A4, A3 and XL mean?
The labels help you find your way: A4 corresponds to 20 x 30 cm and A3 to 30 x 40 cm. XL means 35 x 45 cm for the gold and silver boards and 37 x 50 cm for the silver/gold boards.
