The perfect cupcake topping starts with the right piping tip and a good piping bag. Here you will find a wide range of nozzles, piping bags, our piping and nozzle sets and handy accessories: round tips, star tips and deep-cut star tips, flower tips, Saint-Honoré and rosette tips, disposable, reusable and silicone piping bags, couplers, piping bag stands and rubber bands.
Which tip for which topping?
- Star tips: the classic for rosettes and tall swirls on cupcakes. The open star tip 1M creates the signature rose, while the deep-cut star tips give deep ridges.
- Round tips: with round openings from 5 to 24 mm for smooth dots, balls, lettering and fillings.
- Flower and Russian tips: large and small flower tips, Russian 3D flower tips, the large tulip tip, the small rose tip or the pinwheel flower tip create whole blooms in one go.
- Special tips: Saint-Honoré tips, rosette tips, the star ribbon tip, the grass and pollen tip and the extra-wide 45 mm border tip.
Choosing the right piping bag
Disposable piping bags are hygienic and practical when you work with several colours. They come in lengths from 30 to 46 cm and in packs of up to 100, transparent, milky or green. Professional reusable piping bags and silicone piping bags can be used again after washing. For fine lines, choose the Fineliner piping bag; to get started, the piping bag set with fine tips or the 8-piece nozzle set with coupler and bag. A coupler lets you change tips without emptying the bag, and a piping bag stand holds the bag upright while you fill it.
How to pipe the perfect cupcake topping
Fill the piping bag only about two thirds full and twist the end so nothing squeezes out. Hold the bag vertically above the cupcake. For a rosette, start in the centre and pipe in a spiral outwards. For a tall swirl, pipe several rounds on top of each other and release the tip with a short flick at the end. The cream should be firm and cool: buttercream that is too soft loses the ridges of the star tip.
What to look for when buying
For beginners, a set is worthwhile, such as the starter nozzle set, the classic nozzle set or the 29-piece deluxe nozzle set. If you work more specifically, add individual tips in the size you need. Make sure tip and bag go together: large tips need a large bag or the large coupler, small tips a coupler for small tips.
Piping tips and bags FAQ
Which tip is best for cupcakes?
For beginners, the open star tip 1M is ideal. It lets you pipe roses and swirls right from the start.
Disposable or reusable piping bags?
Disposable bags save washing up and are practical with lots of colours. Reusable and silicone bags last a long time and are ideal if you bake often.
What do I need a coupler for?
The coupler connects tip and bag. This lets you change tips without transferring the cream. Couplers come in small, medium and large to match the tip size.
