Number Cake baking material
Number cake baking material turns an idea into a dessert that makes an impression: this super fashionable cake can be varied endlessly, whether for a birthday, a baby shower or simply as a beautiful cake to bring to dinner. One or two numbers, a letter or a logo form the base, with layers that are crunchy, creamy, soft or melting and a top full of decorations. We have brought together decorations to inspire you as well as practical material for making and safely transporting your creations: templates and baking tools, creams, flavourings and baking mixes, decorations, cake boards and boxes.
What is a number cake?
A number cake is a two-layer dessert made of two stacked bases in the shape of a number or letter, piped with a cream such as ganache, mousse or whipped cream. Decorations such as Sugar flowers, Sprinkle mixes, Cake topper or Sugar decorations add the finishing touch and bring out your chosen theme.
What material do I need for a number cake?
The tools you need depend mainly on the base you choose:
- Shortcrust: the dough must be rolled out evenly – a rolling pin and dough guide bars are ideal. A perforated baking mat and a perforated baking tray give the best baking results.
- Sponge: with a silicone sponge mat and baking release spray you get a beautiful sponge that comes out of the tin perfectly.
- Cutting out: use the templates in Number & letter cake tins, for example the number template; for letters there is Numbers & Alphabet cutters.
- Flavour and colour: our Spices and flavours for Number Cake let you flavour ganache, mousse or whipped cream as you like, and with Food coloring gel you can colour cream and bases.
- Short on time? In Sponge cake and buttercream kit you will find quick mixes such as sponge mix, buttercream mix or pastry cream mix.
- Assembly: keep piping bags and various Piping tips to hand, ideally round or star nozzles from Tip and piping bag.
Tips for decorating
When it comes to decoration, you can let your imagination run free. Make your own macarons, fondant decorations or meringues, create a 3D effect by piping with different nozzles, or add ready-made decorations such as wafer paper flowers, sugar decorations or sprinkles. Finish with a pretty topper and, if the occasion calls for it, a lovely candle.
Finally, you need a nice cake board and a box so your dessert looks its best and arrives safely. In Number cake boxes you will find the right sizes for number cakes. Have fun creating your cakes – and feel free to share your creations with us on our Facebook page!
Frequently asked questions about number cakes
Which cream is best for piping the kisses on a number cake?
Firm creams such as ganache, Swiss meringue buttercream or Enchanted Cream are easy to pipe and keep their shape. Whipped cream should be stabilised and served quickly.
Can I prepare a number cake the day before?
Yes. The bases and cream can easily be made the day before. Assemble and decorate the cake on the day itself so that fruit, meringues and wafer paper stay fresh.
How do I transport a number cake safely?
Place it on a rectangular cake board and in a sufficiently tall cake box so the decoration stays untouched. Rectangular cake boards and boxes come in several sizes.
