Polystyrene cake dummy round Ø 25 cm, 5 cm high

This round polystyrene cake dummy (Ø 25 cm, 5 cm high) looks just like a real cake once covered. It is also known as a styrofoam cake dummy, fake cake, dummy cake or display cake. Made from expanded polystyrene (EPS), it is light, stable and can be decorated like a real cake with fondant, marzipan or buttercream.

At 5 cm high this dummy is shallow: ideal as a base, for slim tiers, heart cakes or lettering. Two 5 cm dummies stacked give the classic tier height of 10 cm. Ø 25 cm is one of the most popular sizes: for the middle tier of a wedding cake or as a single-tier display cake for birthdays, christenings and shop windows.

What is a polystyrene cake dummy used for?

• Practice: covering with fondant, sharp edges, piping and sugar flowers without time pressure

Tips for covering

• Lightly sand the edges or round them with a smoother so the fondant does not tear.
• Moisten the dummy thinly with water, vegetable shortening or piping gel so the fondant sticks well.
• Never place a real tier directly on the polystyrene: always use cake boards and, for heavy tiers, cake dowels as well.
