Cake dummies 5 cm high made of polystyrene (styrofoam) are the flat all-rounders of our dummy range. They are suited to shallow tiers, as a base under a cake, for shop-window display pieces, for photos and for practising covering and piping techniques. Two dummies stacked make 10 cm together, so the height stays flexible.
There is plenty of choice: round in Ø 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 cm, square in 15 x 15, 20 x 20, 25 x 25 and 30 x 30 cm, rectangular in 30 x 20 cm and heart-shaped in 15, 20 and 25 cm. Tips for covering flat dummies
- Prepare the edges: lightly sand the edges before covering so the fondant does not tear along the top edge.
- Moisten thinly: a thin film of water, vegetable fat or piping gel is enough to make the fondant stick.
- Rectangle for lettering: the rectangular 30 x 20 cm dummy offers plenty of space for lettering, logos or designs – ideal for corporate events and trade fair stands.
Frequently asked questions about flat cake dummies
Can I stack two 5 cm dummies to make one tier?
Yes. Two dummies of the same size on top of each other give the classic tier height of 10 cm. Fix the two parts together with a little royal icing or edible glue before covering them as one.
Are polystyrene dummies edible or reusable?
They are not edible: only place food on them with a cake board or film in between. Undamaged dummies are reusable, though – peel off the fondant, clean the surface and cover them again.
