Tips for decorating with royal icing
- Choose the right opening: use a 1 to 1.5 mm tip for outlines and 2 to 3 mm for flooding. The 0.7 and 0.8 mm tips are for lace, lettering and the finest dots.
- Fill the bag properly: fill the piping bag only halfway, twist the top and close it with the band so no icing escapes.
- Remove air bubbles right away: with the ScrapCooking icing needle, pop bubbles in the fresh surface and push the icing into the corners. The fine PME needle helps you prick a pattern through paper.
- Look after your tips: the Decora royal icing tips and the 11 mm round tip are not dishwasher safe, so wash them by hand.
The Decora royal icing tips match Wilton sizes: 1 mm corresponds to Wilton tip no. 1 and 1.5 mm to no. 2, so recipes with Wilton numbers are easy to follow. The Wilton disposable bags come in a dispenser box of 24 and can also be used to melt Candy Melts in the microwave.
Frequently asked questions about royal icing tips
Can piping bags of royal icing be prepared in advance?
Yes. The FunCakes disposable piping bags can be filled ahead and stored in the fridge. Knead the bag briefly before use so the consistency evens out again.
What are the large round tips up to 24 mm for?
Large openings are meant for creams, choux pastry and filling eclairs; the Decora metal tips can even cut out small circles of dough. For cookies with royal icing you need the fine sizes.
