Step by step to your sugar flower
- Roll out: roll the flower paste very thinly and cut out the petals.
- Thin the edges: on the foam pad for modelling, thin the edges so they curve naturally.
- Add texture: press veins into leaves and petals with the veiner.
- Dry: let the flowers dry in shape in a former or on the flower nail.
- Assemble: attach the pieces to florist wire, wrap with floral tape and create the centres with stamens. Finally, add shading with a brush and powder colour.
What to look for in sugar flower tools
With florist wire the rule is simple: the higher the number, the finer the wire. Gauges 18 and 20 are suitable for supporting stems and larger flowers, gauges 24 and 28 for delicate leaves and small blossoms. Sets combining a cutter and a veiner are practical because shape and texture match perfectly. If you model roses, start with a polystyrene cone as the core; polystyrene balls make a base for round flowers and arrangements. Also think about accessories such as the floral tape cutter, which splits the tape into narrow strips.
Frequently asked questions about sugar flower tools
Which wire gauge do I need for which sugar flower?
For large, heavy flowers such as roses or peonies, choose a thicker wire, for example gauge 18 or 20. For leaves, buds and small filler flowers, a fine wire in gauge 24 or 28 is enough.
How long do sugar flowers need to dry?
That depends on size, thickness and humidity. Small flowers are usually dry overnight, while large flowers with several layers need longer. Let each layer dry well before adding the next.
Can I insert wired sugar flowers directly into the cake?
No, wire should never go directly into the cake. Insert the stems into flower picks or holders, or use the plastic wires for cake decorating.
