Thin cake boards
Thin cake boards are light, space-saving and ideal for tarts, light cakes and cakes that are handed over in a box. These round cake boards are only a few millimetres thick and come in sizes from Ø 10 to Ø 40.5 cm. They also work as an intermediate board for each tier of a tiered cake. The range includes thin round white cake boards from Ø 16 to 36 cm, silver cake boards from Ø 10 to 40.5 cm, gold cake boards from Ø 16 to 36 cm, black boards, reversible boards in silver/gold or gold/black, boards with a scalloped edge, white cake circles in sets of 10 or packs of 50, and boards in kraft and with a light wood effect. Whether you bake at home or run a bakery, you will find the right base for every cake here.
Colours, shapes and styles
- Silver, gold and white for classic cakes, from birthday cakes to cheesecakes
- Reversible boards in silver/gold or gold/black with two sides to choose from, such as the 6 round reversible gold and black boards or the 5 reversible kraft and white boards
- Black and scalloped edges for elegant, modern cakes, for example the 30 cm scalloped cake board in gold or black
- Bright colours and wood look for themed and rustic cakes
- Heart-shaped cake boards for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and weddings
- Boards with a hole, meaning a central opening, for tiered cakes with a central dowel
The most versatile are the thin white cake boards in Ø 20, 25 and 30 cm. Thin boards are light, stack easily and take up little space in storage and in the box. For entremets and mousse cakes, the white cake circles in Ø 16, 18, 20 and 24 cm are practical and available in sets of 10 or packs of 50.
Choosing the right size
As a rule of thumb, choose a cake board about 4 to 5 cm larger than your cake, and for tiered cakes exactly the size of each tier. This leaves a narrow border around the cake so you can hold the board without touching the decoration. Some examples:
- Cake Ø 18 cm: cake board Ø 22 or 22.5 cm
- Cake Ø 20 cm: cake board Ø 25 cm
- Cake Ø 26 cm: cake board Ø 30 or 30.5 cm
- Entremet or tier of a tiered cake: cake circle in exactly the same size
Thin cake boards for tiered cakes
In a tiered cake, each tier sits on its own thin cake board, for example Ø 15, 20 and 25 cm. Boards with a hole slide onto a central dowel that keeps the tiers even more stable. Support each upper tier with cake dowels so the thin board spreads the weight evenly. The bottom tier goes on a thick cake drum that is 5 to 8 cm larger, which you will find among the thick cake boards. Tip: secure the cake to the board with a dab of buttercream or melted chocolate so it does not slide while you carry it. Store your cake boards flat and dry so they stay perfectly even.
What to look for when buying thin cake boards
First think about how heavy your cake is. For tarts, cream cakes, cheesecakes and smaller fondant cakes a thin cake board is enough; for very heavy or large cakes a cake drum is the better choice. Then pick the colour: silver and gold look festive, white is neutral and bright, black is modern and wood look is natural. If you bake or sell a lot of cakes, multipacks such as the cake circles in packs of 50 or the gold/black cake boards Ø 26 cm in packs of 10 offer better value. Finally, check that the board fits your cake box.
Frequently asked questions about thin cake boards
How thick are thin cake boards?
Thin cake boards are only a few millimetres thick depending on the model; the 28 cm white cake circles, for example, are 0.8 mm thin. For very heavy cakes or for transporting large cakes we recommend a thick cake drum.
Will a thin cake board fit in a cake box?
Yes, a 25 x 25 cm box takes a board up to Ø 25 cm and a 30 x 30 cm box a board up to Ø 30 cm. You will find matching sets among our cake boxes with cake board.
What is a cake board with a hole for?
In tiered cakes, the board with a hole slides onto a dowel that runs through all tiers. This keeps the tiers perfectly aligned and stops them from slipping.
What is the difference between a cake board and a cake circle?
Cake circles are thin white bases the same size as the cake, ideal for entremets and tiers. A cake board is usually slightly larger than the cake and forms a visible border.
You will also find cake circles and entremet bases, square cake boards and square cake boxes. Shop by colour in the White cake boards, the Silver cake boards or the Gold cake boards.
