«Choba Choba» – a name that says it all

At Cakelicious, we stock the Choba Choba range – a Swiss chocolate brand whose name comes from an indigenous language of Peru and translates freely as «I help you, you help me» or «mutual support». This name is a statement of intent: Choba Choba is the first Swiss chocolate brand directly owned by cocoa farmers from the Peruvian Alto Huayabamba valley. The farmers are not merely raw material suppliers – they are genuine shareholders and co-owners of the company. The Peruvian Choba Choba cooperative is the largest shareholder of the Swiss company, and the farmers sit on the board of directors. This inclusive form of corporate governance ensures that farming families have a strong voice in all decision-making bodies.

An alternative to a self-destructive industry

The idea behind Choba Choba grew from a clear insight: most of the world's 6 million small cocoa farmers receive low wages for their hard work, cannot live from their labour and have no incentive to sustainably grow high-quality cocoa beans. In 2015, Eric, Christoph and 36 cocoa farmers from the Huayabamba valley were determined to test an alternative. They founded Choba Choba – consistently bypassing the conventional middlemen. The cocoa premiums are not dictated by the stock exchange but determined by the farmers themselves, to guarantee them a fair and liveable income.
