How to apply glitter
For a delicate shimmer, dab the powder on with a soft, dry brush. For bold metallic surfaces, mix a little powder with a few drops of clear alcohol or lemon juice to form a paste and paint it on like paint; the alcohol evaporates as it dries. Shake sprays and pump sprayers well and spray from a little distance in short bursts onto the dry surface to avoid drips. Cocktail glitter goes straight into the glass and creates a shimmering swirl when stirred.
What to look for when buying
Read the product name carefully: many items are explicitly labelled as edible, such as the edible glitter dust or the edible cocktail glitter. Choose powder when you want to highlight details, and spray when whole cakes or lots of cake pops need an even shine. For winter scenes, the velvety glittering snow powder is ideal; for autumn and Christmas cakes, go for the warm shades of bronze and Golden Ginger. For a pink party, pair the pink edible glitter dust on the cake with pearl pink cocktail glitter in the glass so cake and drinks match. On New Year's Eve, gold and black look especially elegant.
Glitter dust FAQ
How do I add glitter to a buttercream cake?
The easiest way is with a glitter spray or pump sprayer. The buttercream should be chilled and firm so nothing smudges.
What is cocktail glitter for?
It makes drinks such as cocktails, shots, lemonade or sparkling wine shimmer. The taste stays the same, lips and teeth are not stained, and a small amount is enough.
What is the difference between glitter powder and surface colour?
Glitter powder adds sparkling accents, while glitter surface colours are brushed on and give surfaces an even, coloured sheen.
