Speculoos spice, 45 g
Refine your baking and cooking creations with a pinch of Speculoos spice and discover an extraordinary range of flavours. Mix the Spice mix into a suitable biscuit dough, for example, or add it to savoury dishes such as a Moroccan tagine – this gives your food a distinctive, warm spiciness.
The harmoniously balanced blend of cinnamon, coriander, anise, nutmeg, star anise, cloves and allspice delivers a well-rounded and intense flavour experience and lends itself to numerous creative applications. Of course, the classic speculoos biscuit is the best-known use, but the spice has far more to offer: use it to refine desserts, baked goods or even sophisticated savoury dishes.
For example, you can roll freshly baked churros in a mixture of sugar and Speculoos spice, or use it to flavour apple compote. Once the compote has been cooked down and cooled, it can be beautifully layered into glasses with a light quark or yoghurt cream and crushed biscuits or sponge fingers – creating a wonderfully wintry dessert in no time at all.
The speculoos biscuit is a treat with a rich tradition, particularly popular in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, northern France and Switzerland. Originally, it was given to children as a gift on 6 December, St Nicholas's Day. Today it is a cherished companion to coffee, pairs beautifully with tiramisu and even complements savoury dishes such as duck breast.
With this speculoos Spice mix, you can easily prepare your own speculoos biscuits and delight family and guests alike. As a guideline, approximately one teaspoon of the mix per kilogram of dough is recommended.
The name "speculoos" has several possible origins: it may derive from the Latin word "species" meaning spice, or from the Dutch "Speculaas", a spiced cake known as far back as the 17th century.
